The Ferry restaurant based at the Elephant boat yard, historically was a working ferry which transported the public from Woolston to Southampton City Centre and now provides fantastic food and wine on the River Banks. The Hamble is tidal for approximately half its length and is navigable in its lower reaches, which have facilitated shipbuilding activities since medieval times. Leisure crafts are still built and improved there today.

The River is heart to British sailing and is approximately two miles upriver from Southampton Water. Many enjoy walking and running the picturesque stretch starting from where the Old Sail Making Cottages are at Swanwick to the Rising Sun at Warsash.
